SUSTAINABILITY

WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY?

Sustainability is ability and process of something being maintained at a certain level.

In our environment, sustainability means the conservation of our resources and nature itself

Through sustainability, we aim that future generations can fully enjoy the gifts of our earth!

IMPORTANCE

The Earth is not just our own. It is for each and every person now and into the future

If don't act towards a sustainable lifestyle and a sustainable world, future children will not get to experience a healthy, beautiful earth.

As humans, we recognise that every person is deserving of their human rights - and a healthy environment is one of them.

Without a healthy environment and the resources alongside it, we will fail our fellow humans - as we deprive them of their basic human needs

There are limited resources on Earth, so we must work towards preserving these resources or finding alternatives so that they can be used into the future

@ HOME

@ HOME

Here are a few points on how you could make what you do at home more sustainable:

  • Minimise your use of electricity! Turn off the TV, lights, charger when not in use!
  • To maximise use of energy - do work or watch TV in the family room! This helps you spend time with family too!
  • Encourage your parents to create rain barrels! These rain barrels are easy to set up and they collect water which can then be reused in your garden!
  • Keep a bucket or bag near your shower that can also be used to collect cold water -then use it to water plants, mop, etc
  • Use a draught stopper to stop draught from coming in - this can help keep you warmer without using electricity! You could even make your own with cloth and sand!

@ SCHOOL

Here are a few points on how you could make what you do at school more sustainable:

  • Minimise waste from your lunch! Use reusable containers rather than glad wrap or tin foil!
  • Even better! Try a DIY beeswax food wrap to contain your food!
  • Minimise how much paper you use! Even try going digital!
  • Get to know and understand your school's dedicated bin system - some schools may even have compost or plastic bins!
  • Try out carpooling to school if catching the train, bus or walking doesn't work for you! You could make some new friends in the process!
  • This may seem obvious, but always clean up after yourself! Don't leave your rubbish lying around!"
  • Instead of having balloons at school celebrations - try bubbles or streamers! Balloons end up in our waterways and can hurt sea creatures

IN PUBLIC

  • Catch the train and bus every now again! It will save you money while helping to reduce gas emissions in our atmosphere
  • Either take your rubbish home or throw it in the bin! Don't leave it lying around - the earth is not your bin!
  • Take a pass on plastic water bottles and always bring a reusable bottle around with you! So many public places have fountains so that you can refill your water!
  • If your heading to the park or into the water - particularly our kauri forest - make sure that you aren't bringing any invasive species or diseases! Make sure to clean your shoes or equipment beforehand!
